UoM is a leading higher education institution, located in the city of Miskolc, Hungary. UoM is a multidisciplinary university, conducting cutting-edge research and offering higher education courses across a wide range of disciplines/subjects such as mechanical engineering, informatics, mathematics, theoretical physics, applied research, law, economics, health and arts. Established in 1949, UoM is organised into seven (7) faculties (earth science & engineering, materials science & engineering, mechanical engineering & informatics, law, economics, arts, health care, and music), which are the home of more than 15,000 students and 1,800 researchers and academic staff. The Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (within the Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering) occupies a unique position as a driver for innovation in a range of specialist areas such as pyro and hydro metallurgical technologies, powder and ferrous metallurgical processes, metal bearing waste treatment and archaeometallurgy. It is a research oriented institute, comprising three (3) departments particularly focused on metal waste treatment, melting and recycling, energetic calculations and impact evaluations. Finally, the University holds a strong track record working with and supporting local companies and industries in Hungary that helps transfer technological knowledge and research capacity into final products and industrial processes.
UoM will lead and coordinate WP3 and all its activities, Most importantly, UoM will be responsible to prepare the assessment report presenting key findings and estimates about PGMs savings (T3.2), as an scientific expert in this technological field. UoM, as a higher education institution, will also contribute to the development of educational resources on PGM substitution in vehicle catalysts (T5.2). In addition, the University will carry out research on how to stimulate the emergence of territorial ecosystems (T2.2) and contribute to the definition of territorial specificities with input from own country (T2.1, T2.3). Finally, the University will organise one thematic workshop (T4.1) and one matchmaking event (T4.2) to disseminate project outcomes and maximise project’s impact.
Through its participation in the INNOCAT project, UoM will lay the ground for the deployment of PGMs recycling and substitution ecosystems in the country, contributing also to the emergence of other industrial symbiosis and circular economy schemes. This will be realised by a) transferring into the market an innovative technology for catalyst recycling/recovery not available before, b) assessing country’s potential to engage in PGMs’ recycling and substitution and stimulating the emergence of territorial ecosystems, and c) bringing first-hand experience as acquired during the pilot process. In addition, the project will deliver educational resources that can be embedded in universities and VET providers’ training offerings to build capacity on the topic of PGMs recovery and substitution in automotive catalysts, and provide support services to companies wishing to participate in symbiotic synergies.
