Profile & Expertise

MEERI was developed by the Polish Academy of Sciences with the aim of providing modern, economically viable, environmentally friendly and socially attractive scientific solutions for the sustainable development of the country and its regions in the field of raw materials and energy. The organisation's main research areas include Polish mineral resources, geodynamic synoptic and geothermic of Polish geostructural basins, development of information systems for the purpose of forecasting development of the mineral resources economy, fuels and energy economics, regionalisation of Polish energy policy under economic and ecologic considerations, industrial waste storage in exhausted mine sites and management of municipal waste, and, finally, sustainable development of Polish regions. MEERI is an associate partner of the EIT Raw Materials KIC employing 101 staff, and has conducted extensive research relevant to raw materials savings, as can be seen by its participation in the EIT Raw Materials project REFRESCO that aimed at designing specific training courses in order to support companies, public administrations and organizations in the management of resources in a multitude of professional areas (e.g. miners, recyclers, engineers).

Role in the project

MEERI will carry out project activities in Poland, including a) collecting data for WP2 activities to describe the stakeholders & requirements, and the regulatory framework for the implementation of the INNOCAT approach in Poland, b) selecting one vehicle and proceeding with its retrofitting using INNOCAT technology (WP3), c) transferring the conclusions of point (b) in policy makers (T4.1) and relevant market stakeholders (T4.2) through workshops and match-making events respectively, and d) contributing to the development of the INNOCAT educational resources (T5.2).

Contribution to knowledge building in the region

MEERI will contribute to the commercialisation of INNOCAT technology in Poland through its specialised Division of Mineral Resources Acquisition (Department of Minerals and Energy Market Research). This division specialises for over 30 years in technical, economic and environmental analysis and in the provision of advisory services for large enterprises from the mining and energy sectors. Furthermore, MEERI will utilise its Department of Policy and Strategic Research, and its specialties in the fields of economics and environmental protection, energy economics and the sustainable development of mineral and energy economy, in order to develop policy recommendations adapted to Polish conditions and academically sound educational resources that can be both accessible to market stakeholders and at the forefront of catalyst retrofitting technologies. Commercialisation aspects of INNOCAT will be further promoted through MEERI’s role in the Waste Management and Recycling Cluster (Polish National Key Cluster).
